About

Quickly: name your favorite indie rock band from the Charlottesville, VA music scene in the mid-to-late-'90s. If this task proves difficult, consider that this was also a tall order at that time, even for most people living in this small university town obsessed more with jam bands and bluegrass. Such were the conditions in which Gift Horse existed. Like many of their musical heroes — The Replacements, Superchunk, Pavement — they toiled under near-permanent underdog status for half a decade together, finding some success here and there but never quite able to make the leap to a larger audience.

Releasing one EP, &, and the swan song full-length Rest On Yr Laurels, Gift Horse left behind a legacy of near misses and promises unfulfilled. And rock. Their debut EP features the track "Circuit Breaker" — the song that gave the label its name.
